Day 27 - Southern Caribbean

Sat. Dec. 15, 2007

The previous nights departure from Colon was, as expected, a turning point. Heading north again. With swells breaking over the breakwater that protects the ship anchorage, I new we were in for a sleepless night. A not so uncommon ocurrance in these waters. The Trades typically blow here and you could wait days for a favorable window. With our tight deadline we proceeded to sea in the dark.

The southern Caribbean is so different than the waters on the Pacific side. You don’t see fish, birds, dolphins, etc. Squalls, however, are a common sight. And you find yourself in high, confused seas most of the time. The Trades are averaging 25 kts. day and night on the beam. About 4 days of this to the Yucatan.
